DIFFRACTION 2021
The nature of causality and phenomenology are the core themes investigated in this artwork, exploring questions related to how spatiality and materiality affects subjective experience.
The installation includes outcomes from researching the Buddhist philosophy of ‘Emptiness’ which states all objective existence is dependent on five aggregates of form, feeling, perception, mental formation, consciousness.
Alongside the exploration of Physicist Karan Barad’s concept of ‘Intra- action’ which examines the activity of ‘doing’ and ‘being’ within the world’s continuous becoming. Together with its fundamental constituent ‘diffraction’, the movement generated from the bending and spreading of waves by obstruction.
The visual composition takes inspiration from Gaston Bachelard’s book the poetics of space and the impression of lived experience transcending space. This concept extends into the visual dialogue, showcasing intra activity and the five aggregates in a construct of movement and flow by diffraction. Bringing attention to the causation of displacements which co -exist and pre oppose each other in a flux of openings and closings.
This work offers you to question the components that make up our experiences, to reflect on the nuance of difference and similarity, the fixed and flow that exist side by side in the forever evolving of consciousness.
